The first properly documented fancy dress parties as we would recognise them date back to the 18th Century period, when Masquerade was at its peak.
Masquerade parties and masquerade balls of the time often featured famous characters from English history whilst throughout the nineteenth century fancy dress balls became increasingly popular, with costumes often based on characters from novels.

Fancy dress then spread into European middle-class society and while the well off could afford fancy dress costumes made by exclusive dressmakers, may people fashioned their fantasy costumes at home using left over clothing material.

The more familiar fancy dress parties, however, were initiated by the Victorians and developed further in Edwardian times. Following the Second World War, they became increasingly popular, although costumes tended to be fairly simple until the mid 1970′s.

This was also the decade that saw the importation of an American tradition to British shores – Halloween.

Although October 31 has been recognised as an important religious date for centuries, it is only the past three decades or so that it has become the most popular day of the year for fancy dress, with both adults and children dressing up as ghost, ghouls and vampires.

Whatever the occasion, fancy dress offers us all the opportunity to engage our alter-ego, to show off our inner self by hiding behind a costume – perhaps that’s why it has remained so popular.

Adding to their popularity is the easy availability of quality fancy dress costumes at affordable prices thanks to the growth of specialist fancy dress shops, both online and on the high street.

so for halloween my three friends and i are going as vampires but we’re all going as different eras. one is being all princessy,one victorian,and one midevil but i have no idea what i could go as for it

straighten your hair, and get like black hairspray if your hair isn’t dark.
and then buy those fake vampire vangs that you can slide up your teeth. you can find them at like any party store

then wear a black skirt and shirt, and accent that with bright colored accesories and leggings and jelly braceltets.

almost like a scene/vampire… my friend was that last year!!

I need some ideas for Halloween costumes, but I want to look feminine?

I have looked in the shops and they all have crap Halloween costumes. I don’t want to go over the top, and I want to look feminine (eg. Sexy Devil costume). Any ideas? I don’t really want to spend the earth for it or buy on the internet either.



Do-it-yourself!

I make my own costume year after year, and it’s always much better than those who buy it out of some tacky Clinton Cards or Birthdays or something.

Get a random skirt or top, and then base your outfit off of that.
Red and black look good for Halloween. I recommend wearing a skirt of some sort. Trousers do not go with women at Halloween.

The make up is the most important part. It obviously depends on what you are being, but pale face, with bold lips and eyes – purple, black or red. Make your hair REALLY big, especially if it’s normally thin. Just throw it forward and toss it back, without brushing too much.

Just find random stuff out your cupboard. Like a stretchy belt, shoes, tights, whatever! Also go to like car boot sales, charity shops or somewhere like Primark so that you can get clothes which you don’t mind messing up.

im goingg to be flavorr flav for halloween. i know where to get the big clock and stuff but what should i do for the hat. i was thinking about buying that viking hat with the horns. but what else could i do to make it more flava flav-ish??

oh my god! This seventh grader from when I was in 8th grade last year dressed up as flavor flav!! that’s sooooo awesome :D he looked amazing, ahahha. A girl flavor flav would be soo cool.

Anyways, here’s what he wore:
This goldenish viking hat with white horns and fur around the horns at the bottom
A blue pinstriped jacket/suit
A frikkin huge clock with a gold chain and gold and silver on the clock and a dollar sign in the middle
A black t-shirt underneath

and that’s all he did. But I think you should just add a billion gold and silver chains that are really long and gold and silver rings. You’re a girl, you should have a lot of jewelry =]

To make grills, use tin foil. You can paint the foil gold, such as with spray paint. However, I wouldn’t, because I don’t want paint in my mouth. So as an alternative, you can also look for a candy bar with a golden foil wrapper. They’re usually on the fancier candy.

Here’s some directions-
1. Get tin foil and cut 2 pieces about the size of your mouth.
2. Wrap one on the top row of your teeth and the other on the bottom.
3. Make it fit well and look realistic.
4. Glue on a little sparkle or fake gems to make it extra sparkly.

I wouldn’t put on gems, either, because I wouldn’t want gems in my mouth. I honestly don’t know why people would get grills.
You can also try making the pieces one at a time to make it look more realistic, but foil can rip easily, so it will be hard and take time.

halloween costume?

Well this year will mark my 4 year anniversity of scaring the crap out of little kids on my porch when they come to get candy. I’ve been having trouble figuring out what to wear. I’ve done Jason,Scream and a werewolf. what should I do this year. I was planning on keeping with the werewolf and throwing in some rubber arms and legs with fake blood every where. Will that be good enough?



lol – sounds good. the only other thing that i could think of would be to dress up as a headless zombie, and throw your head at them….

get a large coat / jacket from a charity shop, fasten it up so that your head is inside the coat. make a false head from paper mashe (get a head sized balloon, cover it in a mixture of PVA glue and strips of newspaper. give it about 3 layers, leave to dry, then paint). that way u could chuck your head at them. lol.

we have a house near us that always looks fantastic at Halloween. they have a soundtrack playing Halloween sound effects (u can buy the CD from branches of Wilkinsons), fake grave stones in the garden (painted polystyrene), cobwebs, and a big inflatable Frankenstein monster. all the kids love it.

have fun ! i think i will be sticking to my usual vampire outfit – don’t want to freak my little boy out too much !

Your Avatar wears glasses – - – so pile your hair atop your head, get a hockey jersey & hocket stick, stick the letters GUV on the back, use make-up to blacken an eye, use make-up for assorted bruises, and go as the ultimate Hockey Mom, the Mother of all Hockey Mothers, Governer Sarah Palin!! (PS if you don’t wear glasses you can get inexpensive readers at any $ollar store)…

The other fun one is to go as a Mermaid; best yet, go with the guy or girl of your choice, you lay out in your mermaid costume on a flat cart decorated with treasure chest & undersea gee-gads, and make guy or girl dressedlike old fashion fisherfolk push you around all night while you flap your flippers!

Flippers brings to mind – - – - Flappers, always good for a pretty wahine (woman) and you can be demure or very sexy depending on your mood.

Halloween ideas for girls?

I am a 13 year old girl, and my friend is 12. We are both girls. We know its early but we need a HILARIOUS costume idea. So far, we have thought up carebear, barney, elmo, etc. but they were way too expensive on ebay. We have had a few other ideas such as Nicky and Paris HIlton, but we dont really want to look like sluts. I mean after all, we are wearing these to school, and they have to pass dress code? We do have two friend both 12 who could also do the costumes with us, but they are not really that important. We also want matching costumes. Examples are Barney and Baby bop or Blues clues and Magenta, NOT popcorn and chip dip. We would like to spend under 50 for me, around 30 for her, and around I guess about 40 for the others (if possible). The price is not that important, if it is a really great costume, but definitely no more than 75 dollars. Also, if you do find a costume, could you give a link of where i could buy or rent this costume! We would need adult larges or mediums.
